Gutter Installation in 10 Easy Steps

If you’re looking to reduce costs on your new gutter, you can certainly install them yourself.

It is easy enough to do, particularly if you have a helping hand or two.

Here’s how to do it.

1. Start by measuring. Measure from inside the trim board, to the corner and to other trim boards

2. Start cutting your gutters by putting the end-cap on one end using sealant inside the cracks, and tapping gently with a hammer to get it firmly in place. Use a crimping tool to pinch the ends to keep it in place. There should be a little dimple at the top and bottom when you’re done.

3. Measure for the length of the gutter piece you will be installing. Be sure, be accurate. Measure twice cut once.

4. Put your gutter and miter together, and leave about a quarter of an inch from your initial measurement to allow for expansion and contraction.

5. Add sealant to the cut and. Push it down nice and tight. Drill holes in the backside. And add your rivets. Now put an outlet in the trough so the water will run down the downspout. Drill a hole where the downspout should run, using a hole saw at the end of your drill.

6. Attach the outlet with some sealant, and two more rivets. Put the gutter in place, if you have measured correctly, it should fit right in.

7. Ensure there is a pitch so that the water will run from the highest point, down to the lowest point, down into the downspout. You will want about a half inch difference between the high-end in the low-end

8. Make sure that snow and ice aren’t going to accumulate and weigh down your gutter. Place the gutter at a height that should allow snow and ice to fall right over top of it without collecting. Ensure this by placing a straight edge (like a level) on the shingles of the roof and slide it down off the roof. If it catches or makes contact with the guttering in any way, you need to place it lower.

9. Screw your gutter in place, screw the bracket directly into the fascia and into the rafter tails.

10. Installing new the downspout, and drilling it into the brackets on the wall.
