How To Install Cedar Shake Siding in 6 Easy Steps

You are a DIY warrior, and you are going to save a fortune on labour costs by installing your own siding. Bravo! Now, we are going to show you how to install cedar shake siding to make sure you love the results.

This task is easier than you think, if you do things in the proper order, and exercise patience and discipline along the way.

Of course, a nice weather day is always ideal. But we can’t control that, so let’s focus on the things that we can.

1. Start With the Base

You’ll get your best results if you start on a solid base, like the existing wood siding. Or a plywood shear wall, at a size of about 7/16” or better.

You can install your shakes over the whole wall or as a wainscoting with traditional siding.

2. Add Plastic or Wrap, if Required

Next, you will add plastic or woven house wrap.

But if your wall has siding and trim already installed, you can move onto step 3.

3. Space Your Panels For Shifting

These are going to grow and shrink with the changes to the weather, so you need room to allow for that.

Use the temperature indicator on the panel as a guide the amount of space that you will need to leave.

4. Focus on Your Nailing Pattern

Make sure your nails are properly  centered at every nail slot. Each panel needs to have a nail through the middle hole to prevent any shifting to the left or right.

Also, don’t nail too tightly, as that will restrict movement.

5. Start Your First Course

Now, install a starter strip, beginning with the bottom of the wall at one end.

Use a chalk line to set your level reference lines, as you lay out the courses on the wall. Place your panels, ensuring that joint lines are staggered, which should be offset at least 12 inches from the previous one.

To avoid a repeated pattern, make sure every starter course is longer or shorter than the previous one.

Be sure to choose shakes wide enough to span a seam below, or narrow to offset a seam below. Also ensure the thick edges of a shake cover the nails.

6. Mind the Gap

Check your work as you go. Be patient and methodical.

If there is any gap at the seam, you probably missed a lock. Fix it before you move on.
