The Benefits of Vinyl Siding in the Winter

When the temperatures really start to drop, you will be glad you went with vertical vinyl, or board and batten siding.

You have chosen one of the most energy efficient (and stylish) ways to cover your home. So your bank account is going to thank you when the utility bills come in the mail.

But let’s take a closer look at what exactly a higher R-Value means for your home.

What is R-Value?

R-value measures the resistance of how heat will flow through the thickness of a material, like outdoor siding. The general rule of thumb is the higher a material’s R-value, the greater the resistance or insulation will be.

Most vinyl siding has an R-value of 0.61. How does that stack up to other materials?

  • Brick or Stone 0.44
  • 2-inch stucco: 0.4
  • Fiber cement: 0.37
  • 1-inch brick or stone veneer: 0.11

How Will Vertical Vinyl or Board and Batten Siding Save Me Money?

Simply put, if more warm air is kept inside, while you’re shielded from the cold air outside, your heating system is going to use up less energy keeping your home at a comfortable temperature. This also holds true for air conditioning in the summertime.

At the same time, you’re also going to pay less up front. This is a very affordable material, compared to other types of siding. Wood siding, standard aluminum and steel siding can give you similar R-values, but at a much higher price.

These vinyl panels are also incredibly durable, and impervious to:

  • RottingCracking or warping
  • Insects and mites
  • Mould
  • Rust

This means your siding will be protecting your home for years to come, and will outlast most other materials.

At the same time, if you’re dead set on the look of wood siding, vinyl siding can give you that exact look at a fraction of the price. You can actually buy vinyl siding that’s been engineered to look exactly like wood and it’s nearly impossible to tell the difference… until you see the bill.
